We are looking for a Legal Entity Controller (LEC) to join our Finance team in Portugal. In this role, you will serve as the primary overseer of all financial, accounting, tax, and regulatory activities specific to our Portuguese legal entity. As our company, revenue, and team continue to grow, we are searching for an individual who thrives on challenges, has a keen eye for detail, and desires to make a significant impact across our organization in a dynamic role. The Legal Entity Controller (LEC) will be responsible for overseeing all financial, accounting, tax, and regulatory activities of our Portuguese legal entity. Your role will be pivotal in ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of monthly, quarterly, and yearly financial reporting, driving financial performance, optimizing processes, mitigating risks, and ensuring compliance with all statutory, tax, and fiscal obligations. In addition to managing Portugal's financial operations, you will collaborate closely with the Finance department in the United States. This includes overseeing compliance with policies, procedures, and controls, managing internal and external audits, and assisting with regional tax compliance efforts. Additionally, you will provide support with budget activities, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives and financial targets, and collaborate closely with the Finance Team and Senior Management, providing financial insights and analysis to support strategic decision-making. You will also monitor internal controls and collaborate with the US Finance and Accounting teams on various ad-hoc financial projects and deliverables as needed. Technical Skills:

  • Prepare and review monthly, quarterly , and annual financial statements in compliance with Portuguese and US GAAP
  • Review and approve journal entries and other month-end activities
  • Perform monthly variance analysis on balance sheet and income statement accounts
  • Ensure compliance with Portuguese local regulations, including tax filings and VAT
  • Monitor changes in Portuguese GAAP and tax laws and implement necessary changes
  • Prepare and file regulatory reports with relevant regulatory authorities
  • Develop and maintain robust internal controls to ensure accurate financial accuracy
  • Collaborate with various departments to enhance financial processes and controls
  • Lead and support internal and external audits by providing documentation and explanations
  • Collaborate extensively with outsourced local accountants on various financial and tax reporting matters
  • Understand the payroll process and perform an in-depth review of monthly payroll postings in the general ledger
  • Responsible for the supervision of the accounts payable process (coding of invoices and disbursements)
  • Review and approve monthly reconciliation between US GAAP to Portuguese GAAP
  • Understand transfer pricing methodology and review monthly calculations pertaining to agreements that Digital Assets has with its affiliates
  • Establish a process to monitor and track expenses related to the grants received from the Portuguese government
  • Complexity and Impact of Work:

  • Collaborate with process owners to understand the Company’s risks and controls and establish a solid control environment to support our high growth business
  • Work on complex accounting issues where problems are not clearly defined and where fundamental principles or historical precedent may not fully apply
  • Demonstrate the ability to lead and function effectively in the face of uncertainty and ambiguity to reach conclusions and move the business forward
  • Represent and be accountable for the output of the accounting team through reviews of material entries prior to finalization of financial reporting, producing high quality output and execution
  • Organizational Knowledge:

  • Use your deep knowledge of the strategy of Anchorage Digital and its various business lines. Is actively engaged with different groups to work on understanding historical transactions as well as requirements for executing on go-forward global strategy
  • Collaborate with other leaders across Finance as well as cross-functionally to establish plans for executing on business needs and promote a shared understanding of the needs of Anchorage
  • Work on complex accounting issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth knowledge of the company
  • Communication and Influence:

  • Communicate complex issues clearly and credibly across a wide range of audiences (from junior accountants to auditors to executive management)
  • Articulate a clear strategy for your team and communicate across the company effectively
  • Build effective relationships and rapport with stakeholders including other team managers, cross-functional partners, and external partners
  • Communicate, organize and execute on cross-team goals and projects, utilizing relationships and resources cross-functionally to solve problems
  • Team Leadership:

  • Independently responsible for all aspects of people management with record of successfully leading people, teams, projects multiple times in different contexts.
  • Provides clear directions and priorities to the teams
  • Ensures that knowledge is shared among the team to avoid single points of failure.
  • Evaluates team staffing needs, including identifying gaps, defining roles, and managing the process to request additional resources.
  • Delegates autonomy of tactical decision-making, but maintains responsibility for accuracy of final output.
  • You may be a fit for this role if you have:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in accounting, finance or business administration, or related field
  • 8+ years of experience in financial reporting, accounting or audit, with a focus on multinational companies
  • Strong knowledge of Portuguese GAAP, knowledge of US GAAP a plus
  • Experience with tax compliance and reporting requirements in Portugal
  • Proficiency in financial systems and software (e.g. Netsuite, SAP, Hyperion etc.)
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate extensively across all levels of organization
  • Fluency in English and Portuguese (both written and spoken)
  • Although not a requirement, bonus points if you:

  • Experience working in a Big 4 firm
  • Chartered Accountant (Contabilista Certificado) or equivalent strongly preferred
  • Kept up to date with the proliferation of blockchain and crypto innovations
  • Experience with tax compliance and reporting requirements in Portugal
  • Experience implementing an ERP system such as Netsuite, SAP, or Oracle
  • Been emotionally moved by the soundtrack to Hamilton, which chronicles the founding of a new financial system :)
