Forward Deployed Engineer

📋 Description

• Smallstep is a remote-first company with distributed teams.
• Embed with customers deploying Smallstep's device identity platform to production.
• Work across hardware, software, and customer relationships to resolve deployments.
• Responsibilities span debugging, runbooks, and shaping deployment ops.
• Maintain on-call rotations and deliver strong customer experience.
• Grow the role to balance live deployments, runbooks, and proofs of concept.

🎯 Requirements

• Debug distributed, multi-service cloud architectures in live environments.
• Troubleshoot TLS/mTLS at protocol level (certificate chains, trust stores, handshakes).
• Production Golang experience; build/run shipping code.
• Experience with Bash, Terraform, Git, and runbooks for deployments.
• Customer-facing technical experience (forward deployed engineering or solutions).
