Staff Software Engineer, Backend (Communications Platform)

📋 Description

• Lead the architecture and implementation of the Communications Platform (email, in-product, push)
• Define technical strategy for platform modernization, reliability hardening, and backend standards
• Provide hands-on technical leadership to backend/frontend engineers and guide system design
• Write high-quality Java; lead design reviews, code reviews, and architecture decisions
• Identify and address systemic risks in performance, reliability, and security
• Partner on cross-team architecture initiatives; balance short-term delivery with long-term health

🎯 Requirements

• 10+ years backend engineering on large-scale, customer-facing systems
• Deep Java/backend services expertise (APIs, async, Kafka, MongoDB, CockroachDB)
• Distributed systems experience in production: reliability, scaling, observability
• Proven leadership at Staff or senior-plus level influencing architecture
• Experience modernizing legacy systems while improving reliability and reducing rewrites
• Experience in platform engineering serving internal/external product teams; strong API design
